Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

Posted on: February 28, 2008 4:50 pm

Hi, everybody. Thanks for checking out my blog. I want to talk about the NFL versus NCAA Football and why the NFL will always be better unless the NCAA makes some major changes. The changes I'm talking about are the College Football playoff system, or lack thereof. In the NFL, it's heart and guts; wins and losses that determine who gets to the Superbowl and wins a championship. In College Football, there are no playoffs, and a bunch of people sitting in a room somewhere decide which two teams out of hundreds will play for the National Championship. Doesn't seem right, does it? I know I have a major problem with it.

Don't get me wrong. I still like College Football. But, to me it gets boring once the regular season ends. The teams are selected to their perspective bowl games, and that's basically it. Only two teams are getting a chance at the title. Where's the suspense and excitement in that? Case in point, Hawaii. Granted, maybe they weren't the best team in the nation despite their regular season undefeated record. Yes – level of competition DOES play a factor in team's records. But, shouldn't an undefeated team at least get a CHANCE at the title? It just doesn't seem right to me that they weren't even given a chance.

Take College Basketball for example. Now, I'm not a College Basketball fan simply because I do not like basketball. But, I bring CB up because at least they have SOME kind of playoff system; something that gives College Basketball fans something to look forward to. What do we have to look forward to when the regular College Football season is over? ONE pre-selected bowl game for the teams that make it? Where's the excitement and competitiveness in that?

I'd love to have a playoff system introduced to college football. My reasons why:

1) It would extend the college football season. More football – can't go wrong with that. J

2) It's a much more competitive and exciting way to end the College football season.

3) It gives other teams; some of the underdogs; a chance to be champions, as opposed to having 'experts' decide the fate of who's the best and who isn't.

4) It would give NFL scouts a more thorough evaluation of potential draft picks by seeing what they can do in a playoff atmosphere (NO – I don't consider one bowl game a playoff).

These are my reasons why I believe NCAA Football should adopt a playoff system. Overall, I think it would be great for College Football fans and the sport itself.

Please let me know what you think. Intelligent feedback will be welcome. 5's for all; whether you agree or not. Just no insults, please. Take care.

Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

Great blog, Charlie.

There isn't any reason for a playoff system not to exist for Division I football other than money. Any other reason opponents may come up with smacks of disrespect to the NCAA student-athletes that do compete in a college football playoff.

A 16 team playoff comprised of the Division I conference champions and at-large berths should suffice. The BCS computer rankings, or something similar, can determine seeding for the first 14 games(lower seed travels to higher seed) and the at-large berths.

No more whining and complaining about who gets to play for the national championship. If you want a guaranteed shot at the title, win your damn conference. That's the way it should be anyway.

Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

If they were to reconfigure the College Standings to Determine Who Plays in the BCS Title Game. I think that the most traditional Bowls Stay. Sort of like Brackets. The Season Would Have to be Longer . Regular Season the Same Length , But an Extended Post Season.

Case in point Look at Hawaii They would Not have been undefeated , if They Would Have Played LSU's Schedule. SEC is extremely Brutal.

We Could Bracket up each Conference sending the Highest 2 teams up to a smaller Bowl. The Winners then Move up to Like a divisional round (Bowl Game). Then to The BCS Title Game. We could work it up like that then , There would be no, that is so unfair, We were undefeated and we did not go stuff.

It would be extremely unfair to smaller Schools, because They usually do not have the pool of bodies to pull from to keep them on top. They would not ever be considered a good small school football team because as soon as they hit the Play-offs they would be one and Done.

The Big Conferences Should Have a Championship Game send the Winners to the Next level. And so on and so on.

I do not know if changing anything would work or not. LSU was SLAMMED because they were selected to Play in the BCS title Game.

I think if you play in the SEC , Then 3 losses should be an equal to no losses in another conference. LSU did win didn't they? OSU lost right? Well LSU did have 2 loses.
