Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

Posted on: February 28, 2008 4:50 pm

Hi, everybody. Thanks for checking out my blog. I want to talk about the NFL versus NCAA Football and why the NFL will always be better unless the NCAA makes some major changes. The changes I'm talking about are the College Football playoff system, or lack thereof. In the NFL, it's heart and guts; wins and losses that determine who gets to the Superbowl and wins a championship. In College Football, there are no playoffs, and a bunch of people sitting in a room somewhere decide which two teams out of hundreds will play for the National Championship. Doesn't seem right, does it? I know I have a major problem with it.

Don't get me wrong. I still like College Football. But, to me it gets boring once the regular season ends. The teams are selected to their perspective bowl games, and that's basically it. Only two teams are getting a chance at the title. Where's the suspense and excitement in that? Case in point, Hawaii. Granted, maybe they weren't the best team in the nation despite their regular season undefeated record. Yes – level of competition DOES play a factor in team's records. But, shouldn't an undefeated team at least get a CHANCE at the title? It just doesn't seem right to me that they weren't even given a chance.

Take College Basketball for example. Now, I'm not a College Basketball fan simply because I do not like basketball. But, I bring CB up because at least they have SOME kind of playoff system; something that gives College Basketball fans something to look forward to. What do we have to look forward to when the regular College Football season is over? ONE pre-selected bowl game for the teams that make it? Where's the excitement and competitiveness in that?

I'd love to have a playoff system introduced to college football. My reasons why:

1) It would extend the college football season. More football – can't go wrong with that. J

2) It's a much more competitive and exciting way to end the College football season.

3) It gives other teams; some of the underdogs; a chance to be champions, as opposed to having 'experts' decide the fate of who's the best and who isn't.

4) It would give NFL scouts a more thorough evaluation of potential draft picks by seeing what they can do in a playoff atmosphere (NO – I don't consider one bowl game a playoff).

These are my reasons why I believe NCAA Football should adopt a playoff system. Overall, I think it would be great for College Football fans and the sport itself.

Please let me know what you think. Intelligent feedback will be welcome. 5's for all; whether you agree or not. Just no insults, please. Take care.

Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

Charlie

I could not agree with you more. I think that any teams including some of the non-BCS teams should have a shot if they can run the table at a national title this is the only sport that seems to be biased against the mid major type schools. Basketball really gives everyone a chance to do this.

Another case and point is the Boise State from two years ago they had a chance if they were in a playoff system to do some real damage.

Nice blog Charlie keep the rolling

Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

Right on Charlie. Why can't they work it out? They don't need 64 teams like basketball. The rankings can be used to set say, maybe a field of 16. Then instead of the long layoffs the teams usually get between the end of the season and bowl games, they could square off and be done in four weeks. I just don't understand why they don't do it. Its not like they don't have controversy already. I think it would create a more exciting bowl season. All the lesser teams can still play in the cheaper bowls. get it done.

Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

I cannot agree with a playoff system in college football. I think that having no playoffs guarantees that the best teams in the country would play for the championship. Putting playoffs in only opens it up for the team running a hot streak. The only way I could see a playoff system implimented is if it was a "bracket system" like March Madness. How would the "playoff" teams be chosen? Would the bowl games count as the "brackets"?

Maybe I am a traditionalist, but I like the way it was with LESS bowl games. Pretty soon Community Colleges will be added to the bowl game schedule since they keep adding bowl games.

I think that playoffs would ruin college football. Without the current ranking system, how would the playoff teams be chosen? Again it would be a bunch of people sitting in the room picking who gets into the playoffs.

Let me know what everyone thinks.

Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

Charlie, what's up pimp? Only have 6 replies so far? Don't worry, it's a start and as you can see you already moved up to a 94. Anyways. you bring up some valid points about the lack of play-offs in CF.

How about some 5's for me although my post was untelligent!

Hey, Hawks. Well I was at 96 in January. LOL. Maybe I'm on my way back up there. As for your posts, they're never unintelligent. What's going on, mate?

Hey Charlie. Good thread. The BCS is a joke. I admittedly don't give college football the time of day unless Penn State is involved. That's just me, though...

Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

I agree with every point you made in your blog.

I would love to see a college playoff system.

I think the problem you will run into is the fact that the NCAA considers them students first and this would be taking up too much of their semester. I personally don't agree with that. What's another 2 or 3 games?

Why NCAA Football Should adopt a playoff system

That's a good point, jiggadhu. If it doesn't affect the students negatively in College Basketball, then what's the problem with extending the college football season?

Hey, Culter. You're a Penn State fan? Didn't know what? What about Colorado or Colorado State? You don't root for the hometown teams?
